ten years to completion

I started painting this picture around ten years ago. My first grandson. It is based on a black & white photo that my son took of little Cal. The face turned out sweet, but the overall painting was monochromatic and blah. I could not get the shoulders right, and the painting became a real source of frustration. so I tossed it aside for years & years & years. About a month ago I had an inspiration while viewing some google images of angels for a different painting and pulled it out of the closet and reworked the entire background putting in the wings. It was done in a couple of days. I look at that painting and remember the angelic face on that wee child who is now almost 12. The title "First Grandson" came to me as I was finishing it up. Anyone who has a grandchild should be able to relate to the concept...or so I thought. This was a milestone for me because actually, I didn't care who appreciated it. I love my angel.
